Mastering the Gradebook
Grades: An Overview
The Grades tool gives you access to your course grade book. Your grade book includes all the scores that you have recorded for your students across all assignments. If you set grading criteria in the Assignment tool, it will automatically be reflected in the gradebook and will display a calculated final grade column.
Entering grades is easy! Any grades entered using the SpeedGrader appear in the gradebook, but you can also manually enter grades as well. The gradebook gives you a quick glance of how you have evaluated your students at any given date in the course, and offers some quick ways to communicate with them about their performance.
Each change in the gradebook is saved automatically so you never lose any of your work. When using the gradebook, you can activate SpeedGrader, curve grades, and send messages to all of the students who haven’t submitted or who have scored less than an identified score on a specific assignment. You may also export and import grade book scores in .csv format.
Tips for Using Grades:
By default, Canvas allows students to see assignment grades as soon as the instructor has graded the assignment. In some cases, instructors may wish to hold student grades until all assignments have been graded, and then release grades to all students at the same time. To hide student grades temporarily, an instructor can choose to mark an assignment as muted. Students can still see and submit a muted assignment. Only the grade will be hidden.
Grading in the Gradebook:
Most likely you will use the SpeedGrader to enter grades. The grades will appear in the Gradebook when you are done. However, you can manually enter and edit scores in the Gradebook. The Gradebook is generally designed for one instructor role to enter grades at a time. Because of how the Gradebook loads and stores data in the browser, multiple users should not grade assignments at the same time since each grader cannot view the most recent information for a submission
